GIS
Office of Physical Plant (OPP) uses GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to create, maintain, and share geographically referenced information to model spatial features throughout campus. OPP’s enterprise GIS consists of on-premise GIS servers, cloud-based GIS servers, and desktop GIS software that facilitate the creation, maintenance, storage, and sharing of GIS data and geospatial products. OPP’s enterprise GIS is utilized by twenty desktop GIS users and more than 300 online users to provide services to OPP staff, Penn State staff, consultants, faculty, and students.
OPP’s GIS includes many different GIS layers that can be generally classified as basemap layers or operational layers. Basemap GIS layers are used to create basemaps that provide background, reference, and context. Operational GIS layers are thematic layers that are displayed over basemaps.
