Committee recommends third phase of East Halls renovations for approval

Tuesday, February 27, 2018

The Board of Trustees Committee on Finance, Business and Capital Planning today (Feb. 22) recommended the final plan approval and expenditure of funds for the next phase of the long-term initiative to renovate the East residence halls at University Park.

Phase 1c of the project includes renovating Brumbaugh, Pinchot and Tener halls. As with previous phases, the facilities will receive new and efficient building systems, connection to the campus chilled water system for climate-controlled living spaces and updates to recreational spaces. Shared private bathrooms also will be added to the core of each floor.

Other improvements to the three residence halls include a redesigned two-story entryway, accessible pedestrian circulation, landscaping and updates to parking and vehicle circulation.

The multiphase renovation of East Halls is part of the Housing and Food Services capital plan, designed to address urgent needs due to aging facilities. The East Halls renovation is planned to be completed by 2022. Phase 1a included the now-completed Earle Hall and the renovation of Stuart Hall, with an expected reopening for summer 2018. Phase 1b included the construction of Martin Hall and renovations of McKean and Pennypacker halls. All three are on schedule to open this fall.

The Board of Trustees Committee on Finance, Business and Capital Planning approved the final plans and authorization to expend funds for Phase 1c of the East Halls Renovation. The full board will consider approval at its meeting on Feb. 23.
