Roof of Deike Building
Purpose:
To establish procedure to follow when accessing the roof of Deike Building.
Policies and Procedures:
The exhaust from the laboratory fume hoods in Deike Building can cause a potential exposure problem. The exhaust exits the side of the penthouse about nine feet above the roof line. Louvers deflect the exhaust down toward the roof. This configuration exposes workers on the roof to contaminants generated in the lab hoods.
Laboratory 432 generates hydrofluoric acid fumes (HF) which are highly corrosive to tissue. Washing of the affected area will not stop tissue destruction. The entrance to the roof is posted to alert personnel who must work on the roof to check Lab 432.
"Hydrofluoric acid may be in use. Check Lab 432 before accessing roof. Call EH&S at 5-6391 with questions"
The hood must be turned off and tagged out using red tape across the fume hood opening during occupancy of the roof.
