Responsibilities for Reporting and Notification on the Event of a Chemical or Biological Material Spill in or Outside a University Building or Facility
Purpose:
To establish a policy for reporting and notifying pollutant spills (chemical or biological) inside or outside of any University building of facility.
Policies and Procedures:
OPP employees shall notify the Service Desk immediately upon detection of a spill or a pollutant (chemical or biological) in or outside a University facility. If the Service Desk is not staffed, employees shall notify Police Services immediately.
The Service Desk shall notify the following immediately:
- Contact EHS (5-6091) Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM, no holidays
- Contact Police Services (3-1111) all other times
Information to be by the reporting person
Persons who report spills or releases shall obtain the following information and provide this information to Service Desk personnel or University Safety personnel:
- Name of person reporting spill
- Date and time of spill
- Location of spill - room, building, parking lot
- Nature of material (s) involved - chemical or biological material
- Is it a petroleum-based product such as oil or gasoline or is it another material
- Is it/has it entered the sanitary drain system or storm sewer system by a floor drain, manhole, etc
- Estimated quantity of material spilled
- Description of spill - any injuries, possible hazards to human health or the environment
- Extent of contamination, if known - ex: soil, air
- Any measures underway to control the release
