Procedures When Working on Chemical Fume Hood Fans, Ducts, and Motors
Purpose:
The purpose of the following procedures is to protect Office of Physical Plant employees from exposure to chemicals or other agents during maintenance activities which involve handling or contact with components of chemical fume hoods and their associated ductwork and motors.
Policies and Procedures:

When working inside a chemical fume hood or other enclosure where chemicals are used or stored.
- The hood/ enclosure must be cleared of all chemicals and equipment before working inside. Laboratory personnel are responsible to clear these items.
- No noticeable chemical residues should be present.
- Contact Environmental Health and Safety to evaluate any questions regarding the removal of chemicals or equipment from inside the hood or to determine whether noticeable residues are present.

Protective clothing to be worn during maintenance activities:

Rubber gloves
- Wash with soap and water after each use
- Dispose of gloves only after they become visibly dirty after cleaning with soap and water.

When working on fans, ducts or motors
- Contact Environmental Health and Safety if you have any questions regarding access onto roof areas. They will determine if weather conditions are acceptable to allow further dilution of exhausts.
- Identify room(s) where fume hood originates.
- Before conducting any visual inspections or maintenance of the ductwork or motors, go to the room(s) where the hood originates. Make sure that all containers of chemicals or other liquids are closed and that no chemical-generating activities are in process.

Tag-out the front sash of the fume hood(s) that are associated with the ductwork, fans or motors that will be under repair by conducting the following measures:
- Pull the sash cord
- Use red tape available at OPP Stores to tape an orange sign to the front of the sash. The sign shall read: This Unit is Out of Service. DO NOT USE or OPEN. Persons working on Roof.
- Fill in the work assignment number and date on the sign in the appropriate space.
