Fume Hood Roof Exhaust Fans
Purpose:
To establish procedures for working on fume hood roof exhaust fans.
Policies and Procedures:
Tags have been placed on the roof exhaust fan units. The tags indicate the room location of the hood corresponding to each roof unit. (sample attached) Labels have also been placed on roof exhausts that correspond to radioactive material hoods.
When Office of Physical Plant employees are required to perform maintenance on fume hood exhaust fans the following procedures should be followed.
- Check with the room occupant to determine if the hood (fan) can be turned off. If it cannot be turned off at that time, schedule a hood shutdown.
- Try to find out what materials were being used in the hood. If the radioactive tags are not correct, notify Environmental Health and Safety.
- When needed, use gloves and respirators (check for correct cartridges) that have been issued to employees for added protection.
- Be sure to wash face and hands after servicing these units.
