Materials Shipment/Handling Process Action Team

Goal:

Reduce cost and effort wasted on storing and moving materials from place to place

Problem/Background:

• OPP Stores personnel are spending too much time moving and storing materials needlessly
• OPP Stores will be losing at least 9,000 sq ft of needed storage space
• Collect data on the number and types of material moves

Objective:

To develop and implement a process that will result in materials being stored correctly upon receipt and eliminate the unnecessary movement of materials to alternate storage locations

Constraints/Resources:

• No additional staff will be available
• No additional space will be available

Key Performance Measures:

Percent of time materials are stored and delivered efficiently

Expected Results:

Develop and implement a process that will result in materials being stored or delivered efficiently upon receipt

• Direct Delivery of materials to job site by vendor
• Reduction of amount of stock on hand for some items
• Increased use of JustInTime(JIT) shipments and ordering
• Specify delivery dates on orders to vendors
• Future Action:
• Electronic Data Interface with major common carriers
