Sponsor:

Members:
- Jeff Dice, Leader
- Jim Hillard
- Dave Liberatori
- Robin Parko

- Frank Tice
- Mary Jane Drake, Facilitator
Problem/Background:
- Delivery and retrieval of barricades results in excessive time and costs
- The barricade process is out of control. Proper delivery and retrieval is not controlled.
- Barricades are left on job sites long after work is completed which creates poor aesthetic conditions, complaints of stray barricades and undermines credibility of our process.
- Barricades are moved away from intended use areas that compromise safety.
- Barricade inventory is not being controlled and barricades are lost or damaged.
- Barricades stock must be accessible and accounted for 24 hours a day.
Objective:
Reduce the costs to deliver and retrieve barricades
Constraints/Resources:
- Seed money for some additional barricades or tracking and identification process efforts could be available.
- Continue to meet customers' expectations and emergency needs.
- No additional staffing will be available.
Key Performance Measures:
- Percentage of barricades lost or damaged.
- Average cost to deliver and retrieve barricades (total cost varies in any time period).
Expected Results:
- Implement the work process changes and follow up to ensure changes are effective and remain in place.
- Provide a recommendation on how to renew the resources.
Review Milestones:
- Flow diagram for the existing process is complete.
- Team has completed evaluations of options.
- Implementation plan developed.
Desired Report Out Date:
April 1999
Update:
- A barricade log was created to provide a way of keeping track of barricades on campus. This has allowed a better control of barricades at job sites.
- A weekly check of barricades at job sites ensures better aesthetic conditions.
- The implementation of a minimal service fee for the barricades has enabled the barricade inventory to be replenished replacing lost and/or damaged barricades.
- In addition to barricades, the team included temporary signage in the process to accommodate customer requests; also at a minimal service fee to replace lost and/or damaged signage.
- The team was able to purchase a custom barricade trailer to accommodate customers that require a large number of barricades.
- The team currently meets once a year to review the current process and implement any necessary changes.
