Environmental Health and Safety

Eisenhower Parking Deck showing front door accessThe Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for the development and implementation of environmental and all occupational health and safety programs throughout Penn State's multi-campus system. EHS has three areas of responsibility: Environmental Protection, Occupational Health and Safety, and Radiation Protection.

Environmental Protection covers infectious and chemical waste management, accidental release of hazardous materials (response and cleanup), lead-based paint management, emergency response planning, underground / above ground storage tanks and environmental assessments of property transactions.

Occupational Health and Safety deals with asbestos management, biological and laboratory safety, indoor air quality, ergonomics, fire prevention, industrial hygiene and chemical safety, and accident / injury prevention.

Radiation Protection deals with the use of radioactive materials, waste disposal of radioactive materials, and the use of radiation-producing machines, such as x-ray units.

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety reports to the Assistant Vice President for Physical Plant, under the Sr. Vice President for Finance and Business.
